This January the Marvel Universe made history with the introduction of ABC’s Agent Carter – the first high-profile Marvel project to be headlined by a female lead.
Fans were quickly captivated by Agent Peggy Carter and Company’s adventures and ABC was wise enough to renew the breakout series for a second season.
While Season Two is still, sadly, months away, Marvel and ABC used this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event as a way to provide fans with some juicy nuggets of information to help feed their Agent Carter appetite.
During Marvel’s Comic-Con festivities, Agent Carter stars Hayley Atwell (Agent Peggy Carter) and James D’Arcy (Edwin Jarvis) sat down with members of the media to discuss Season Two’s new location, brining Agent Carter to life, what’s in store for Season Two and more!
Q. What does moving to Los Angeles mean to Agent Carter in terms of responsibilities, her outlook, etc.?
Hayley Atwell: I have no idea why she’s going. Do you?
James D’Arcy: No. I think she’s stationed down there. By the SSR, for a job, though I don’t know what the job is.
Atwell: I think she’s in a better place within herself, so she’s ready to move on romantically, and I think that’s something that will be explored in Season 2.
Q. The EPs and writers have lauded what you, Atwell, for what you bring to the character of Peggy Carter. How do find the balance between showing emotion and being a strong female?
Atwell: I don’t know. I think when I first played Peggy, I felt like I was showing aspects of a woman that was strong and capable and could fight like men and was resourceful and all these things. But to me, what I wanted to do in the first season was show her vulnerability and the strength of character that she has within her vulnerability. And her sadness, her grief, and the emotional and psychological cost of not only losing Steve, but living in a very isolated world, where she can’t really confide in anyone, because she can’t trust anyone.
So for me, psychologically, that was a fantastic character study, and it felt that I had to approach Peggy to give her any sense of kind of truth or gravitas in a world of the kind of Marvel which can be sometimes quite heightened and exaggerated. But I felt that it was important that the audience related to Peggy or found her believable in a way that they can emotionally connect to in order for the series to have any kind of genuine care, and for the audience to kind of maintain their interest.
Q. What are you both looking forward to in Season 2?
D’Arcy: Now that the show’s set in L.A., in my head, there’s hopefully a kind of Chinatown-y vibe. You know, L.A.’s such a great city to shoot in the 40s if you can really shoot that period. So I’m very excited to see what we get to do in that regard.
Agent Carter will return as part of ABC’s midseason scheduled, once again bridging the gap between part one and two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s third season. [Source]
